Abstract

Oil and gas exploration and production in Latin America has come a long way since Standard Oil initiated operations in Lake Maracaibo, Venezuela, more than 100 years ago. From a few dominant players during most of the first 80 years of activities—mainly Mexico and Venezuela— the last 30 years have witnessed a diversification of producers that have changed the map of hydrocarbon reserves and production in the region.
