Next month Houston will host the 35th annual Offshore Technology Conference (OTC). Most geophysicists, even those working on offshore prospects, look upon this conference as an exposition of big equipment. More than 50 000 attendees from around the globe will gather to view this equipment and to discuss the technology requirements to locate this expensive equipment in optimum spots that will economically produce hydrocarbons. With all of the emphasis on big equipment, the OTC technical program is an underappreciated element of the conference.

Over the past 10 years the geophysical element of the technical program has seen major improvements in content and presentations. We, SEG members, derive several benefits from this program. One, it gives us an opportunity to see developing technologies in a springtime venue. Secondly, it is a multidiscipline forum so we get both the chance to see technologies . . .
