Board members explain review process

TLE Editorial Board

The first 20% of the full text of this article appears below.

As members of the TLE Editorial Board, we are frequently asked about our editorial policies and procedures, in particular, about what our review criteria actually are and how they differ from those for GEOPHYSICS. For example, we've been asked if we ever reject papers for publication (yes, we do), and also if we refer papers to GEOPHYSICS that we think are more suitable for that journal (yes, we do that too). In this article we describe our procedures for selecting and editing articles for publication in TLE.

The TLE Operating Practices and Record, which is maintained by the editorial staff in Tulsa, contains the formal documentation of editorial procedures (guidelines for authors and guest editors, also kept by the editorial staff, include general descriptions of editorial functions as well). These procedures are designed specifically for effective implementation of the mission of TLE, which is explicitly stated in the Operating Practices and Record:

The purpose of THE LEADING EDGE is the timely dissemination of information likely to interest and impact the SEG membership. Topics—written in a readily accessible style—may vary from routine Society business (election of officers, annual reports) to summaries of professional meetings or historical anecdotes or tutorials on geophysical theory and/or technology. TLE is not, and never was intended to be, a journal of record.

Based on this statement of purpose, it's clear that one of the main differences between GEOPHYSICS and TLE centers around the respective depths of treatment in the science of geophysics; namely, that GEOPHYSICS is focused primarily with more purely scientific (and, consequently, often more mathematically rigorous) aspects of geophysics, whereas TLE is more involved in the application of geophysics as a solution to technical and business problems. In view of this distinction, GEOPHYSICS . . . [Full Text of this Article]
