An unexpected source of profit

I'll start out, as we always do in Halliburton, with a safety message. I was talking to Dalton Boutte earlier today and the safety message I'll bring you is from his company. During the past year WesternGeco won a contactor award in Alaska for only spilling one gallon of oil that had to be reported as an environmental spill. This is an outstanding accomplishment that results from a commitment to the environment and a commitment to safety. I applaud WesternGeco on its results. It's important for me to congratulate Dalton because companies in our industry need to stop talking about their own accomplishments; instead, we should start talking about others' in areas where we should collaborate. Safety is something we do as an industry. As I move through this talk on sustainability, I hope you'll get the spirit that there are some things we should work together on as opposed to competing. The impression that our industry leaves with governments and the public determines our ability to access reserves and to work in other countries.

I'm not going to give the definition of sustainability as I think everyone generally understands the meaning. But I would state that I'm beginning to see companies are committed to sustainability with the presence of what would be called a code of business conduct, a code of integrity, or a code of ethics. This is a common theme throughout companies that are committed to sustainability, committed to the environment, committed to the societies in which they work, and committed to profitability.
