It is actually quite entertaining to read the first few issues of TLE. There are familiar faces looking 20 years younger, old news about defunct companies, and old-fashioned clothes and hairdos. There are also all the ancient ads. The buzzword back then was 3D. From land and marine acquisition to data processing and interpretation, that was pretty much all the service companies were promoting. Yet 3D had still not been fully accepted; it would take another decade for this technology to become mainstream.
During its 20 years of existence, TLE has accompanied the development of 3D through a number of articles and special issues. It also itnessed the gradual adoption of geophysics as the critical technology for exploration and production. 3D first took off with marine, when the introduction of multistreamer vessels dramatically lowered acquisition costs.
