Geoscience has lost one of its young and charismatic leaders. Barbara Sue McBride, a vice president of ExxonMobil Exploration Company, died unexpectedly of natural causes on 31 July 2000, in Taos, New Mexico, while attending an artists' workshop. We mourn her loss not only to her family and friends, but also to our industry.

Barbara was born in Littlefield, Texas, as the youngest of four sisters. She grew up in a family of strong religious faith that valued education, enjoyed a good laugh, and loved each other unconditionally. Although her sense of adventure would take her away from this small town near Lubbock, she stayed the down-to-earth person her parents and sisters raised so well. Through the years she often traveled back to north Texas to spend time with her family and remind herself of what really mattered in her life.
