The effects of stress paths on acoustic velocities and 4D seismic imaging

Time shifts on 4D seismic images result from two basic causes: (1) acoustic velocity changes due to fluid migration, fluid substitution, fluid composition; and (2) velocity changes resulting from changes in total stresses (i.e., the vertical and horizontal stresses) during depletion. This paper is concerned only with the latterthe effect of changing total stress on rock velocity.
