Abstract
There is no argument that abundant, clean water is fundamentally essential to human survival. Urban growth, industrial contamination, natural calamities such as tsunamis and hurricanes, and seawater incursion are putting severe stress on the quality and quantity of water resources worldwide. Between one and two billion people on planet Earth lack an adequate, sanitary supply of water, and many who have enjoyed an adequate water supply in times past are now realizing the effects of drought and/or shortage of water resources to meet the competing interests of agriculture, ranching, urban development, and recreation.
